Last Thursday, April 21, Heart of Danville Project Manager, Nick Wade, began the #shoplocal30 social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram. The campaign is in connection with Love Local Fridays, a new event that will premiere on May 20.
“We hope that Love Local Fridays will be a success for our downtown merchants,” said Heart of Danville Director, Bethany Rogers. “In order for that to happen we need to get people downtown to shop and eat.”
Out of the need for downtown foot traffic, Wade set to work on creating #shoplocal30.
The project began with research to identify 30 benefits of shopping local. Wade was able to separate the reasons into four distinct groups: economy, community development, shopping experiences and health.
“While Nick and I find the reasons to shop local interesting – and we hope others do too – we thought it was important to supplement Nick’s work,” said Rogers.
The Heart will build upon the campaign by spotlighting unique items or services that can be bought at the merchants of Downtown Danville.
“I wanted to create excitement about buying local, and what better way to do that then to get people talking on social media,” said Wade.
