  • Love Local Friday Hits Main Street on Friday

  • With the spring showers rolling away and the warm weather coming our way, the Heart of Danville is looking to bring Main Street to life with their first Love Local Friday event on May 20th.

Much like the Shop 2nd Saturdays event of 2015, Love Local Fridays are a chance for people to come downtown and support local small businesses.

“Shop 2nd Saturdays did not become the destination downtown event we had hoped.  Working closely with our Promotions Committee we are transforming Shop 2nd Saturdays into Love Local Fridays in the hopes we get more community involvement and downtown dining shopping and dining as a result.,” said Bethany Rogers, Heart of Danville Director.

The event will begin when the downtown merchants open their doors on the 20th. By shopping at participating downtown businesses and spending $25 you will be entered to win one of four drawings for $50 downtown dollars. In addition, if someone comes to all three Love Local Friday events in 2016, spends $25, and submits the Love Local punch card to a participating business,  they will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing of $200 in October.

Quality over quantity is the focus with Love Local Fridays. The Heart has scheduled the quarterly events in conjunction with already planned programs. By scheduling their event on a day with several downtown happenings, the hope is that there is more of a draw for people to come downtown. One of the biggest events happening the weekend of May 20th is Centre College’s graduation.

“With every hotel in Danville full, we wanted to create an opportunity for visitors to come downtown and enjoy what our main street has to offer by offering the shopping promotions, as well as free entertainment with the Restless Leg String Band and our first Lawnchair movie,” said Rogers.

The Restless Leg String Band will perform a free lively bluegrass set from 5 to 7 PM at Constitution Square  Park compliments of the Heart of Danville.  And then the first Lawnchair Theater movie of the summer, Finding Nemo, will show at the park at 8:30 PM.

Other events happening in Danville on Friday, May 20th include: the Community Arts Center’s monthly Ballroom Soiree at 8 PM;  the Sounding Joy Women’s Choir will present their spring concert at the Presbyterian Church at 7:30 PM; the Garden Club of Danville’s standard flower show at the Boyle County Public Library from Noon until 5:30 PM;  Art of Danville will be hosting a night of abstract art called “Divergent Abstraction,” from 4-8 PM.”

In its 7th year Lawn Chair Theater has become a downtown entertainment staple for families during the summer. Admission is free, and all movies will begin at dusk (8:30-9:00 PM) at

Constitution Square Historic Site. Popcorn and sodas will be sold with proceeds going to support the Heart of Danville. Bring a chair or blanket and relax and enjoy! The 2016 season will include three movies:

May 20th – Finding Nemo, sponsored by Danville Pediatric Dentistry

June 17th – Back to the Future, sponsored by Family Medicine Clinic of Danville

July 15th – Alice in Wonderland, sponsored by Webster Orthodontics

The rain dates for the movies will be the following Saturday: May 21, June 18, and July 16.  For all the movies and Love Local Friday be sure to like Heart of Danville’s Facebook page so you can get last minute weather cancellation and update information.
